From Citizen Journalism to Economic Self-Reliance<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A central objective of the Nanak Media Fellowship is not simply to train people to produce journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is to help create the conditions in which people can build sustainable livelihoods from their own media skills, local knowledge, reporting, storytelling, and audiences.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

USI does not want citizen journalism to become permanent unpaid labor.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, we do not want to promise income that cannot be guaranteed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Platform monetization, advertising, sponsorships, affiliate income, commissions, assignments, and other opportunities depend on audience development, eligibility requirements, quality of work, market conditions, platform policies, and many other factors.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI’s role is to build the network, skills, infrastructure, training, distribution opportunities, and revenue pathways that can help Fellows develop those opportunities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The long-term objective is:<\/span><\/p>\n

Build the journalism. Build the audience. Build the skills. Build the revenue. Build greater self-reliance.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

1. BUILD YOUR OWN MEDIA PRESENCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Every Nanak Media Fellow should be encouraged to develop an independent digital presence appropriate to their work.<\/span><\/p>\n

This may include:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • YouTube<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Instagram<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Facebook<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Podcasts<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Personal websites<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Newsletters<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Other appropriate publishing platforms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The Fellow’s identity and relationship with their audience should remain important.<\/span><\/p>\n

    USI is not intended to replace the Fellow’s own media identity with a centralized USI identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Instead, USI should function as network infrastructure and an additional distribution channel.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    A Fellow might therefore have:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Their own channel + their own audience + USI distribution + network collaboration<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Rather than depending on a single institution for all visibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    2. YOUTUBE AND PLATFORM MONETIZATION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    YouTube and other digital platforms may provide revenue opportunities once a creator meets the applicable eligibility requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n

    These requirements are determined by the individual platform and may change over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n

    USI does not guarantee platform monetization.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    A Fellow’s ability to generate platform revenue may depend on factors such as:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Eligibility requirements<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Audience size<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Watch time or other platform metrics<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Content policies<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Geographic availability<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Advertising demand<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Platform decisions<\/span><\/li>\n
    • The type and quality of content produced<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      USI can help Fellows understand these systems, improve their production skills, develop audiences, and create content that complies with applicable rules.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Where a Fellow independently monetizes their own eligible channel, the resulting platform revenue belongs to the Fellow<\/strong>, subject to the platform’s terms and any applicable Fellowship agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

      3. ORIGINAL REPORTING CAN BECOME A MEDIA ASSET<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      A strong local report can have a life beyond a single social-media post.<\/span><\/p>\n

      A Fellow may develop:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Short news reports<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Video documentaries<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Interviews<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Investigative features<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Local history documentaries<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Environmental reporting<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Community stories<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Cultural documentation<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Podcasts<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Photo stories<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Explainer videos<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Multilingual productions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Some material may eventually be suitable for licensing, syndication, documentary distribution, educational use, or other lawful media opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n

        USI may help Fellows understand how to package and distribute such work.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Potential distribution opportunities could include domestic or international media organizations and digital platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n

        No distribution opportunity is guaranteed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        The objective is to create high-quality local journalism that can travel beyond its original community.<\/span><\/p>\n

        4. FREELANCE MEDIA AND RESEARCH WORK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        The skills acquired through the Fellowship may also create opportunities beyond the Fellow’s own channel.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Depending on their skills and professional development, Fellows may pursue:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Freelance journalism<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Video production<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Documentary work<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Translation<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Subtitling<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Voiceover<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Photography<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Research assistance<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Transcription<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Social-media management<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Digital storytelling<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Local-language content production<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Media production assignments<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          International and domestic media organizations, research institutions, NGOs, educational organizations, publishers, and other legitimate clients may sometimes commission this kind of work.<\/span><\/p>\n

          USI may help Fellows develop portfolios and professional skills so that they can seek such opportunities independently.<\/span><\/p>\n

          USI does not guarantee assignments or employment.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          5. AFFILIATE REVENUE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          USI may develop carefully selected affiliate arrangements involving books, educational resources, digital products, or other relevant material.<\/span><\/p>\n

          Affiliate links may appear in:<\/span><\/p>\n

          • Video descriptions<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Websites<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Social-media posts<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Newsletters<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Podcasts<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Other appropriate digital publications<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            If a visitor purchases something through an affiliate link, the applicable platform or merchant may pay a commission.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Where USI operates such a program, the relevant revenue-sharing arrangement will be disclosed to participating Fellows.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Editorial independence comes first.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            A product should not be promoted merely because it generates a commission.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Affiliate relationships must be disclosed where required, and they must not determine editorial conclusions.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Revenue follows useful recommendations; it does not purchase editorial approval.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            6. LOCAL ADVERTISING AND SPONSORSHIP<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            Local journalism can create relationships with local businesses and institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Where appropriate, Fellows may be able to generate income through:<\/span><\/p>\n

            • Local advertising<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Sponsorships<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Community business partnerships<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Event promotion<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Other lawful commercial arrangements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Such opportunities must remain clearly separated from editorial decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n

              A business that purchases advertising does not purchase favorable journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

              A sponsor cannot require a Fellow to suppress legitimate reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n

              A journalist cannot present paid promotion as independent reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n

              USI will develop guidelines covering:<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              • Advertising disclosure<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Sponsored content<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Conflicts of interest<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Political advertising<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Misleading advertising<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Prohibited categories<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Separation of advertising and editorial content<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Commercial revenue must never silently become editorial influence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                7. THE POWER OF THE NETWORK<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                One Fellow may have a small audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

                A network of thousands of Fellows can create something much larger.<\/span><\/p>\n

                USI therefore wants Fellows to help one another discover and distribute useful work.<\/span><\/p>\n

                This may include:<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                • Following other Fellows<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Watching relevant reporting<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Sharing useful stories<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Providing constructive feedback<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Translating or dubbing appropriate material<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Connecting local stories with audiences elsewhere<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Collaborating on investigations or documentaries<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Amplifying verified journalism<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  But this is important:<\/span><\/p>\n

                  NETWORK PARTICIPATION MUST BE GENUINE.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  USI will not<\/strong> require Fellows to manufacture likes, comments, subscriptions, views, or watch time merely to manipulate platform algorithms.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Artificial engagement can undermine both journalism and the network’s credibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Fellows should share work because it is relevant, useful, interesting, or important to their audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  The network should create genuine reach \u2014 not artificial numbers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  8. MULTILINGUAL JOURNALISM AS AN ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  India’s linguistic diversity is not simply a communication challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  It can also become an important part of the network’s value.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  A story produced in one language can potentially be:<\/span><\/p>\n

                  reported \u2192 translated \u2192 subtitled \u2192 dubbed \u2192 localized \u2192 distributed<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  across other linguistic communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  A Fellow who knows a regional language may therefore contribute much more than translation.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  They may provide access to a community, cultural context, local terminology, sources, and knowledge that would otherwise remain invisible.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  USI wants to develop a multilingual network in which language becomes a bridge between communities rather than a barrier between audiences.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  9. USI WEBSITE AND DIGITAL REVENUE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  USI itself will also need sustainable\u00a0<\/span>revenue sources. Possible<\/span>\u00a0future revenue streams may include:<\/p>\n

                  • Website advertising<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Affiliate revenue<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Books and e-books<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Educational materials<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Courses<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Journalism and media-training resources<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Memberships<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Digital products<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Licensing<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Other lawful activities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                    The purpose of diversification is straightforward:<\/span><\/p>\n

                    USI should not depend permanently on donations from a small number of people or institutions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                    At the same time, revenue-generating activity must remain consistent with USI’s public-interest purpose and editorial standards.<\/span><\/p>\n

                     <\/p>\n

                    10. FELLOW-OWNED WORK AND USI DISTRIBUTION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                    Nanak Media Fellows should retain clearly defined rights in the work they create.<\/span><\/p>\n

                    Where a Fellow permits USI to publish or distribute their work, the applicable Fellowship and Content Rights arrangements should specify:<\/span><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    • What rights are being granted<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • Whether the license is exclusive or non-exclusive<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • Where USI may publish the work<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • How long the permission lasts<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • Whether USI may edit or translate the material<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • How attribution will be handled<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • How revenue, if any, is shared<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • What happens when the relationship ends<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      The objective is to help Fellows build an audience and livelihood \u2014 not to take ownership of their creative work by default.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      11. BUILDING A PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      A Fellow’s digital work can gradually become a professional portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n

                      Over time, a portfolio might demonstrate experience in:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      • Reporting<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Documentary production<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Interviewing<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Research<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Verification<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Editing<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Photography<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Translation<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Subtitling<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • Local-language journalism<\/span><\/li>\n

                        This can help Fellows pursue opportunities both within and outside the USI network.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI therefore encourages Fellows to think beyond individual videos.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        12. INCOME IS NOT GUARANTEED<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        This principle deserves to be stated clearly.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        Nanak Media Fellowship is not an employment contract.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI does not promise:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        • A fixed salary<\/span><\/li>\n
                        • Guaranteed assignments<\/span><\/li>\n
                        • Guaranteed YouTube monetization<\/span><\/li>\n

                          Digital media is competitive and unpredictable.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          USI can aim to provide training, network infrastructure, distribution opportunities, professional development, collaboration, and access to potential revenue streams.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          The Fellow remains responsible for developing their own media practice and audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Start with the person.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Give them skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Give them access to technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Connect them with other people.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Help them build an audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Help them develop professional capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Create pathways for their work to generate income.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Then allow the network to grow organically.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          The smartphone becomes the first piece of infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          The community becomes the first newsroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          The network becomes the distribution system.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          And the audience becomes part of the economic foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          THE LONG-TERM OBJECTIVE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          USI’s long-term objective is to help create a network in which citizen journalism can become a viable professional activity for people who have historically lacked access to institutional media infrastructure.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          This could eventually involve thousands of Fellows working across India’s regions and languages.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          But growth is not the only objective.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          The network must remain:<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Evidence-based.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Ethically grounded.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Economically transparent.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Respectful of copyright and creative rights.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Independent of donor and advertiser control.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          Accountable to its editorial standards.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          A large network without these safeguards would not fulfill USI’s purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          OUR ECONOMIC PRINCIPLE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          USI’s economic model can be summarized in one sentence:<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Create the conditions in which the people who produce valuable journalism can increasingly earn from the value they create.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                          That means supporting the Fellows:<\/span><\/p>\n
