United States of India (USI) is a non-partisan, people-oriented, public-interest media initiative<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are not affiliated with, owned by, or controlled by any political party.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not endorse candidates or political parties.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not ask our readers or Fellows to vote for a particular party.<\/span><\/p>\n

We do not believe that journalism should become an extension of electoral politics.<\/span><\/p>\n

But non-partisan does not mean value-free<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI has a clearly stated set of public-interest commitments. We are pro-people, pro-woman, attentive to marginalized communities, and committed to examining caste inequality and the experiences of Avarna communities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We believe that human dignity, equality, freedom, social justice, democratic accountability, institutional independence, and the right of people to tell their own stories are legitimate subjects of public-interest journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

These commitments determine what we consider important to investigate and whose voices deserve to be heard.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

They do not<\/strong> determine the factual conclusion of a story.<\/span><\/p>\n

That distinction is fundamental to USI.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT DOES “NON-PARTISAN” MEAN?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For USI, non-partisanship means that our journalism is not determined by loyalty to a political party, candidate, government, opposition group, ideological organization, corporation, donor, or other powerful interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may criticize a government.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may investigate an opposition party.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may examine the actions of a corporation.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may question a social movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may report on a religious institution.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI may investigate an organization whose objectives broadly overlap with USI’s own values.<\/span><\/p>\n

And USI may also publish information favorable to an institution, party, government, or organization when the evidence warrants it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Agreement does not earn favorable coverage. Disagreement does not justify unfavorable coverage.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our editorial standards must apply to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

NON-PARTISAN DOES NOT MEAN POLITICALLY INDIFFERENT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A common misunderstanding of neutrality is that a journalist must stand emotionally or morally nowhere.<\/span><\/p>\n

USI does not subscribe to that idea.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

If a community experiences discrimination, we believe it warrants investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

If women face violence or exclusion, that deserves public attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a marginalized community is absent from the public record, that absence itself may deserve investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a government agency exercises public power, its actions can legitimately be scrutinized.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a corporation affects the lives or livelihoods of large numbers of people, its conduct can legitimately be investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n

If a political party makes a claim, that claim can be examined.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Public-interest journalism does not become partisan merely because it examines power or gives visibility to people who have historically received less attention.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our question is not:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Which political side does this story help?”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Our first questions are:<\/span><\/p>\n

What happened?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What evidence exists?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Who is affected?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Who has power?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Whose experience has been overlooked?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

What does the evidence show?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

USI IS PRO-PEOPLE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Pro-people” is one of the central values of USI.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

By this we mean that the lives, dignity, safety, livelihoods, rights and experiences of ordinary people should matter in public discourse.<\/span><\/p>\n

People should not be reduced to statistics, vote banks, consumers, beneficiaries, victims or political constituencies.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are participants in society.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have knowledge about their own lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have the right to be heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is closely connected with USI’s broader idea of epistemic freedom<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n

People should have the ability to participate in producing the knowledge that shapes their communities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

USI therefore seeks to create opportunities for people to document their own communities through the Nanak Media Fellowship and the wider USI media network.<\/span><\/p>\n

But being pro-people does not mean automatically believing every claim made by a member of the public.<\/span><\/p>\n

We will listen without prejudice and verify without contempt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A person’s testimony deserves to be heard.<\/span><\/p>\n

A factual assertion still requires appropriate verification.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

USI IS PRO-WOMAN<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

USI is explicitly pro-woman<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We understand this commitment to mean support for women’s:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • dignity;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • equality;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • safety;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • freedom;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • economic independence;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • political participation;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • access to knowledge;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • freedom from discrimination;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • ability to tell their own stories;<\/span><\/li>\n
  • ability to participate in public life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Women’s experiences should not be treated as secondary subjects.<\/span><\/p>\n

    At the same time, being pro-woman does not mean that every claim made in the name of women is automatically accepted as fact.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Women, like everyone else, deserve journalism based on evidence, fairness and accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Our commitment to women is a commitment to their equal dignity and agency \u2014 not a substitute for editorial verification.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    USI also seeks to develop institutional structures in which women have substantial leadership, ownership and decision-making authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Our long-term objective is a women-led and women-owned nonprofit institution<\/strong>, subject to the establishment of the appropriate legal and governance structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

    USI AND MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    USI intends to pay particular attention to communities that have historically had limited access to institutional media and knowledge-producing structures.<\/span><\/p>\n

    This includes, among others:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Dalits;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Adivasis and Indigenous communities;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Bahujan communities;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • marginalized caste groups;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • economically disadvantaged communities;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • linguistic minorities;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • remote and rural communities;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • marginalized workers;<\/span><\/li>\n
    • communities whose experiences are poorly represented in mainstream public discourse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      This does not mean that USI assumes that every member of a marginalized community thinks alike.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Nor does it mean that marginalized people are incapable of being questioned or criticized.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      It means something simpler:<\/span><\/p>\n

      Their experiences, knowledge, and perspectives deserve access to the public record.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      WHAT DOES USI MEAN BY “AVARNA”?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      USI uses the term Avarna<\/strong> as a social and historical framework for discussing communities positioned outside or disadvantaged by traditional varna hierarchies.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Within USI’s vocabulary, the term highlights the historical relationship among caste, social exclusion, access to power, and the production of knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      USI’s interest in Avarna communities is therefore not merely demographic.<\/span><\/p>\n

      It is epistemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets to speak?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets believed?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets published?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets represented?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets to interpret society?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who gets to define what is normal?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Who controls institutions?<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      These are questions of power.<\/span><\/p>\n

      USI wants to create greater space for communities that have historically had less institutional power to document and interpret their own experiences.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      At the same time, USI will not treat either “Avarna” or “Savarna” as a homogeneous political category.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Individuals cannot be reduced to their caste location.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Our journalism should examine structures of caste power without assuming that every individual within a social category has identical beliefs, interests, or political behavior. Savarana are multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, and multi-racial. They hold varied political and class positions. We recognize their liberal positions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Hence, CRITICIZING CASTE POWER IS NOT AN ATTACK ON INDIVIDUALS belonging to the Savarana caste<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

      USI intends to investigate caste hierarchy, discrimination, exclusion, privilege and unequal access to institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

      That may sometimes require examining institutions or social practices associated with dominant caste groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Such reporting should distinguish between:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      a social structure<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      and<\/span><\/p>\n

      the individual human beings who exist within that structure.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      USI will not use caste identity as a substitute for evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

      We will not assume that every person belonging to a socially privileged group supports discrimination<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Nor will we assume that every person belonging to a historically marginalized group shares the same political position.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Our subject is power, evidence and lived reality<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      THE SAME EDITORIAL STANDARD APPLIES TO EVERYONE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      USI may investigate:<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      • the Union government;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • state governments;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • political parties;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • opposition parties;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • elected representatives;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • courts and public institutions;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • law-enforcement agencies;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • corporations;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • religious organizations;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • caste organizations;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • NGOs;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • activist organizations;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • media organizations;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • universities;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • civil-society institutions;<\/span><\/li>\n
      • USI itself.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        No organization receives immunity because it agrees with our values.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        No organization becomes a legitimate target merely because it disagrees with us.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        The powerful should expect scrutiny.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        The marginalized should expect to be heard.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Everyone should expect evidence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        USI DOES NOT PROMISE “BALANCE” AT THE EXPENSE OF TRUTH<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        USI does not believe that every controversy can be resolved by giving exactly equal space to every position.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Evidence does not always divide neatly into 50\u201350 proportions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        If credible evidence overwhelmingly supports one factual proposition, presenting an unsupported contrary claim as its equal merely to create the appearance of “balance” can mislead the public<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        At the same time, USI will distinguish between:<\/span><\/p>\n

        fact<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        testimony<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        allegation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        opinion<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        interpretation<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        analysis<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        and<\/span><\/p>\n

        verified evidence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Readers should be able to understand which is which.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        EMIC PERSPECTIVE DOES NOT MEAN UNCRITICAL ACCEPTANCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        USI’s media philosophy emphasizes an emic perspective<\/strong> \u2014 understanding social reality from the perspective of the people who experience it.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        This is particularly important when reporting on communities that are frequently described by outsiders.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        But an emic perspective is not a license to abandon verification.<\/span><\/p>\n

        A community’s account of its experience may reveal something that outsiders have failed to see.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        That account should be taken seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n

        It should then be investigated using appropriate evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n

        Emic perspective. Independent verification.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        This is one of the foundational principles of USI journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        FACT, ANALYSIS AND OPINION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        USI will seek to distinguish different forms of published material.<\/span><\/p>\n

        NEWS AND REPORTING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        What happened, based on available evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

        TESTIMONY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        What a person or community says happened to them.<\/span><\/p>\n

        ANALYSIS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        An evidence-based interpretation of events and their significance.<\/span><\/p>\n

        OPINION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        A clearly identified argument or viewpoint.<\/span><\/p>\n

        INVESTIGATION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        Reporting that attempts to establish facts that may not otherwise be readily visible.<\/span><\/p>\n

        COMMENTARY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        A writer’s interpretation or argument, which should not be mistaken for independently established fact.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Readers should not have to guess whether they are reading a verified report or an author’s interpretation.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        OFFICIAL STATEMENTS ARE CLAIMS TOO<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        USI will not automatically treat a government press release, corporate statement, police statement, political speech, institutional announcement or activist statement as established fact merely because it comes from an authoritative source.<\/span><\/p>\n

         <\/p>\n

        An official statement is evidence of what that institution says<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

        It may or may not establish what actually happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Where appropriate, USI will seek:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • documentary evidence;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • independent sources;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • eyewitness testimony;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • expert analysis;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • publicly available records;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • court documents;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • official data;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • photographs or video;<\/span><\/li>\n
        • other verifiable material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The appropriate level of verification will depend on the nature of the claim.<\/span><\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          THE RIGHT OF RESPONSE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          People and institutions criticized in USI reporting should, where reasonably possible, have an opportunity to respond to substantive allegations.<\/span><\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          A response does not have to be accepted as true.<\/span><\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          But the opportunity to respond is part of fair journalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          If an institution declines to respond, USI may report that it was approached but did not respond.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          Where a response materially changes the factual understanding of a story, the reporting should reflect that.<\/span><\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          USI CAN BE WRONG<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          No journalist, editor, researcher or institution is infallible.<\/span><\/p>\n

          USI can make mistakes.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          Our commitment, therefore, is not to claim perfection.<\/span><\/p>\n

          It is to create a culture in which errors can be identified and corrected.<\/span><\/p>\n

          When credible evidence demonstrates that USI has published a factual error, we will seek to:<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          • correct it;<\/span><\/li>\n
          • acknowledge the correction;<\/span><\/li>\n
          • preserve transparency about what changed;<\/span><\/li>\n
          • avoid silently altering material when the change is substantively important.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Correction is not weakness.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            It is part of editorial accountability.<\/span><\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            USI’S POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            USI is not an electoral campaign organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

            We do not endorse candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n

            We do not instruct readers how to vote.<\/span><\/p>\n

            We do not accept political funding in exchange for editorial influence.<\/span><\/p>\n

            We do not promise favorable coverage to political parties.<\/span><\/p>\n

            A political party, candidate or elected representative may be reported on because their actions are relevant to the public interest.<\/span><\/p>\n

            But coverage does not constitute endorsement.<\/span><\/p>\n

            Likewise, criticism of a political party does not automatically constitute support for its opponents.<\/span><\/p>\n

            USI’s loyalty is to its editorial principles, not to an electoral organization.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            NO PARTY GETS A PERMANENT ALLY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            USI may agree with a political party on one issue and disagree with it on another.<\/span><\/p>\n

            It may support a particular policy objective while criticizing the way a party attempts to achieve it.<\/span><\/p>\n

            It may publish criticism of a government while acknowledging an action that is supported by evidence.<\/span><\/p>\n

            It may publish criticism of an opposition party even when that party shares some of USI’s stated values.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            This is normal for an independent publication.<\/span><\/p>\n

            USI does not need a permanent political enemy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            It needs permanent editorial standards.<\/span><\/p>\n

             <\/p>\n

            DONORS DO NOT BUY EDITORIAL INFLUENCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

            The same principle applies to financial supporters.<\/span><\/p>\n

            A donor cannot purchase:<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            • favorable coverage;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • suppression of criticism;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • editorial approval;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • control of an investigation;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • political endorsement;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • preferential publication;<\/span><\/li>\n
            • removal of inconvenient reporting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              This principle is also stated in USI’s Support framework.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Money supports infrastructure. It does not purchase journalism.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

              Diversified revenue is intended to reduce institutional dependence on any single donor, advertiser, political organization or patron.<\/span><\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              ADVERTISERS DO NOT BUY JOURNALISM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

              USI may eventually generate revenue through advertising, sponsorships, affiliate relationships, digital products, memberships, services and other lawful activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              Commercial relationships must remain distinct from editorial decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Advertising should be identifiable as advertising.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Sponsored material should be appropriately disclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n

              An advertiser should not have the right to dictate independent editorial coverage merely because it provides financial support.<\/span><\/p>\n

              Revenue must sustain journalism, not control it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

               <\/p>\n

              THE FOUNDER IS NOT THE INSTITUTION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

              USI was founded by Yang Burzhome<\/strong>, an independent researcher, writer, and self-taught cultural anthropologist.<\/span><\/p>\n

              His personal writings, opinions, research interests, or political observations should not automatically be treated as the editorial position of every USI contributor.<\/span><\/p>\n

              USI is intended to develop into an institution capable of functioning independently of its founder.<\/span><\/p>\n

              That means developing:<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              • distributed leadership;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • editorial safeguards;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • transparent finances;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • documented governance;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • independent accountability;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • succession mechanisms;<\/span><\/li>\n
              • clear separation between personal and institutional views.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                The founder may start the institution. The institution must ultimately outlive the founder.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                 <\/p>\n

                USI WILL ALSO SCRUTINIZE ITSELF<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                Institutional independence requires self-examination.<\/span><\/p>\n

                USI may make mistakes in:<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                • editorial judgment;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • verification;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • language;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • interpretation;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • financial administration;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Fellowship management;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • governance;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • technology;<\/span><\/li>\n
                • communication.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  When credible concerns are raised, they should be examined rather than dismissed simply because they are inconvenient.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  Readers, Fellows, contributors and supporters should be able to question USI.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  A public-interest institution that cannot tolerate scrutiny of itself cannot credibly demand accountability from others.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                   <\/p>\n

                  WHAT USI DOES NOT MEAN BY “PRO-PEOPLE”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                  Being pro-people does not mean:<\/span><\/p>\n

                    \n
                  • believing every allegation;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • opposing every government;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • supporting every protest;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • defending every activist;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • agreeing with every community leader;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • rejecting every corporation;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • treating every institution as corrupt;<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • assuming every marginalized person is right;<\/span><\/li>\n

                    • treating men as inherently responsible for wrongdoing;<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • assuming every disagreement is misogyny;<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • abandoning due process;<\/span><\/li>\n
                    • ignoring evidence that complicates a preferred narrative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      It means that women’s equality, dignity, safety and agency are legitimate public-interest concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n

                      Fairness and evidence remain applicable to everyone.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      WHAT USI DOES NOT MEAN BY “PRO-AVARNA”<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                      Being attentive to Avarna communities does not mean:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        \n
                      • treating all Savarna individuals as enemies;<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • assuming all Avarna individuals share the same political views;<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • replacing evidence with caste identity;<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • excusing wrongdoing because the accused belongs to a marginalized group;<\/span><\/li>\n
                      • turning journalism into caste-based propaganda.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        It means recognizing that caste can affect access to power, institutions, representation and knowledge \u2014 and that these structures deserve investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI seeks to challenge exclusion without creating new forms of dehumanization.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        OUR EDITORIAL FORMULA<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI’s political and editorial philosophy can therefore be summarized as:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        ATTENTIVE TO MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Those historically excluded from institutional media deserve meaningful access to the public record.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        PRO-AVARNA IN REPRESENTATION<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI seeks to expand the ability of communities disadvantaged by caste structures to tell and interpret their own stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        INDEPENDENT IN JOURNALISM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Evidence, verification, fairness and editorial judgment remain essential.<\/span><\/p>\n

                         <\/p>\n

                        OUR COMMITMENT TO THE PUBLIC<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI does not ask readers to trust us because we use the words “independent,” “non-partisan” or “people-powered.”<\/span><\/p>\n

                        Trust must be earned through practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        We therefore aim to demonstrate our independence through:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        Evidence before assertion.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Verification before publication where verification is possible.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Context rather than sensationalism.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Right of response.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Corrections when we are wrong.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Transparency about funding.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Separation of editorial and commercial interests.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        No political party ownership or editorial control.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Protection of the independence of Fellows.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Respect for the dignity of people we report about.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Willingness to scrutinize institutions \u2014 including ourselves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        THE PRINCIPLE THAT GUIDES US<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI does not seek to create a journalism in which everyone is forced to agree.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It seeks to create a public space in which more people can participate in producing knowledge about the society in which they live.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        That requires disagreement.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It requires questioning authority.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It requires listening to communities that have been ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It requires investigating powerful institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It requires challenging unsupported claims \u2014 including claims made by people with whom we sympathize.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        And it requires the intellectual humility to say:<\/span><\/p>\n

                        We may be wrong. Show us the evidence.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                         <\/p>\n

                        INDEPENDENCE IS A PRACTICE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI’s independence cannot be established by a declaration on a webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        It must be demonstrated over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If we criticize a government, we should be able to explain why.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If we defend a community, we should be able to explain the evidence and principle involved.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If we publish an allegation, we should identify it as an allegation.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If we make an error, we should correct it.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If a donor disagrees with our reporting, our editorial standards should remain unchanged.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If a political party praises our work, that should not make us its ally.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        If a political party attacks our work, that should not make it our enemy.<\/span><\/p>\n

                        That is what non-partisanship means to USI.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                         <\/p>\n

                        OUR CAVEAT IN ONE SENTENCE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        USI is non-partisan but not value-free; pro-people, pro-woman, and attentive to marginalized and Avarna communities, while remaining committed to evidence, verification, fairness, editorial independence, and the right of every subject to be heard.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Listen without prejudice.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Verify without contempt.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Challenge power without becoming its mirror.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

                        Give people a voice without giving up the obligation to seek the truth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
