‘Azadi from fear, violence’: LSR students take to streets in Delhi
The air outside Lady Shri Ram College for Women pulsed with chants of “azadi, azadi” and “inquilab zindabad” on Wednesday, as a sea of women students from LSR and other Delhi University colleges surged onto the streets. Their voices rose in unison, demanding an end to sexual violence and calling for stronger security measures around their campus. With placards held high and slogans ringing out against patriarchy, rape culture and moral policing, the marchers pressed forward, galvanized by the recent alleged gang-rape of a minor girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir and a police encounter with one of the accused just steps from LSR’s back gate. The students voiced urgent concerns about the safety of women navigating the roads, lanes, and parks surrounding their college. Throughout the protest, the call for “azadi” from fear and violence echoed again and again. At the heart of the demonstration, students demanded working CCTV cameras, regular police patrols and better lighting for the shadowy stretches near the college. Marchers drew attention to glaring security lapses around the back gate and nearby areas. “From Jamuhi to LSR, women and minors are under attack across India. We demand an end to moral policing and rape culture. The government must take cognizance and act against perpetrators,” said Saavy, AISA president, Delhi University.
